about

This is a song about loving and losing people to psychological illness. For me, it was Borderline Personality Disorder but for others it's so many different things. There is a special pain associated with losing someone who is still physically there and you can't grieve with any kind of finality like death, and so you grieve because you tried to love them but loving instability is a hard, hard thing. This is a song about being on my side of the fence from BPD. Suffering from a psychological illness is something I can't imagine the pain and difficulty of but I have been on the love-through-this side of the fence as these illnesses appear and unravel, and if you're trying to process or come to terms with that kind of grief, I get it. This is for you.
My favorite part about this song from a writer's standpoint was creating the choir at the key change (listen to the whole thing- worth it). Ruben and I built and performed all the vocal parts ourselves by creating different vocal qualities in different ranges to essentially create a gospel choir effect. I was scolded many times for my insistence on the "Felicia" part- which is the belter in everyone's choir group who has to solo even when they're not supposed to be soloing. I love her best. Also, I was asked at one point when recording the soprano parts "what the hell I was doing" and "are you trying to sing an opera over it?"- NO, Ruben.
First of all I was going for more Mariah Carey and SECOND of ALL- I had a vision. And I gloriously was proved right when he finally heard the whole track and not me just screeching high notes by myself in the room. But seriously, creating a wall of voices and multiple harmonies was one of my favorite memories on this album.

lyrics

It’s like loving the water You can’t hold on
Not for much longer if you’re not strong
The tides keep on shifting so hot and cold
But without rhythm by which to go
You’re like loving the water
Ten years ago I thought I’d known
All of the pain that awaited this home
I never knew worse could be true
That the water in waves would come rushing through
Through windows and walls and photos lining halls
If nothing stays and nothing stands
If nothing can be saved
If what I hold dear are memories and tears
The walls come down the crashing sound of water in my ears
CHORUS
There’s no calm in tears just more water feeding fears
The glassy top, alluring stop
Look down into the clear
At what lies below, breathing down and down we go
Then the layers break, the surface quakes
A sudden undertow
It’s like loving the water something so strange
Like calming an ocean or kissing the rain
Like loving the water waiting on the shore
Hoping the storm dies the same as before
Like loving the water and you can’t hold on
Not for much longer if you’re not strong
Loving the water waiting on the shore
Hoping the storm dies the same as before
You’re like loving the water
