about

Picture yourself in a smoky, dark jazz club at the end of the night. There's just you in front of the stage and through the smoke you see a singer appear under the light. Then the piano starts. My first foray into writing jazz, this is one of my favorite pieces on the album. I love singing along to jazz classics, I love the vocal freedom of jazz greats and the wonderful placement for my lower alto range, so writing this felt great.
When I'm not doing music, I own a dance studio that specializes in teaching wedding couples their first dances and I hear A LOT of love songs. I love a good love song. But I notice the love songs that are out there are about fairy tale romances, about everything being rainbows and unicorns all the time- where's the songs about the reality of love. Being in love is passionate and romantic but it also includes not always agreeing with each other, it includes hard work and keeping the fire alive when 10, 20, 30 years goes by, it includes some of the less glamorous parts of building a foundation and being comfortable with each other and getting through hard times together as well as good. I felt all the in-love couples I know deserved a love song about real love.
I haven't written a love song (that was actually positive) in a very long time but this album had it's own accompanying love-story. It brought my own love into my life. This project has been a few years in the making, and I'm so lucky to have been able to fall in love, build new facets of that love, and have a partner like Ruben on this project. I wrote this song for him and for all the couples-in-love that I work with that I felt deserved a song about every-day, forever love, and not a fleeting fairy tale. As my best friend, love of my life, and tortured artist, thank you for bringing your creative genius, your skills, your patience (or at least trying to pretend to be), your talent and voice to this project and creating with me over the years. I know you love me even when you can't.

lyrics

Will you take my hand?
Will you love me even when you can’t?
If I took a stand you know you don’t have to stand behind me
All I ever wanted was someone like you
All I ever needed, darling, was you
I don’t have to like the words you use to call me “love”
I just need to know as much is true, wouldn’t you
Tell me now the ones you like to say
Tell me now in your own way
Thirty years will come and go
And the days will pass as we grow old
And time brings tests along the way
Promise me you’ll remember this day as it was
And the you’ll take my hand
And love me the way I know youc an
Then you’ll dance with me ‘cause sometimes life don’t always sweep us off our feet
All I ever wanted was someone like you
All I’ll ever need, baby, is you
