about

A feminist anthem, this song was written for all the women I know who have overcome extreme obstacles in their lives to get to where they are and thrive let alone survive. It is about the strength of women required knowingly or not to navigate a socially unjust world. I believe in bringing awareness to the social issues and inequalities leveled against women and in case you haven't figure it out, I am a raging feminist. These issues are near and dear to my heart as I watch the world, society, communities incur them, enact them or fight them. I myself was one of the many, many victims of college-campus sexual-violence. I've watched young women I love face bullying and harassment from her male counterparts at school and be told "boys will be boys". I've worked in places where women's asses still get grabbed in the office and I've been in places where the cultural norm is "hush hush". Women around the world face issues like female genital mutilation, socially accepted rape, lower class and pay and limited opportunities based on their gender, and even worse based on their skin color, and the list of the warfare- from subtle to outright abusive- goes on and on. I don't want that for my daughters or for yours. This is about the need to drive change so that the "norms" we must prepare our younger generations for are not our own. To all the strong women in my life, thank you. Keep kicking ass.

lyrics

You know she thinks that there's something wrong
Always knew that she don't belong
Lord knows she tried to understand it ‘til she realized it's them can't handle it
You know she questions what she's worth
Always knew that love would hurt
What if she finds out that she can have it
If she'd just reach right out and grab it
She's the only one
She's got to know where she comes from
She's got to make it on her own
When she's the only one who know
They always want one piece of her
Something to own, something to conquer
They take her hair, her skin, her smell
Ignore her sounds in this moment of hell
So many take what isn't theirs
And she can't hide even when she's scared
How many walk with weights of past
How long do those feelings last
CHORUS
Hold her down so she can't fly
Keep her close so she won't know why
If she knows the way to lovin' her own self
She won't need any other help
Baby girls around the world
All those young hearts, those minds, those curls
So many doubts, so many fears
that come as whispers in their ears
What will it take to make things fair
How much pride and how much care
To teach them love, to teach them gladness
To spare their souls from so much sadness
CHORUS
We've got to change the things she knows
